When you need a COC, and who can issue one.
The most common trigger in Cape Town is a property sale: a change of ownership legally requires a valid gas COC if the property has an LPG installation, and conveyancers across the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard and Southern Suburbs routinely hold up transfers over a missing or expired one. A COC is also required on every new gas installation, and whenever an existing one is altered, an appliance added, a cylinder bank resized, or piping moved during a renovation.
Only an installer currently registered with SAQCC Gas may issue a valid certificate. One signed by someone without current registration isn't a legal document, whatever it looks like on paper, and will be rejected by insurers, conveyancers and the authorities. Most companies advertising a gas COC in Cape Town are property-compliance generalists. Red Flame is a registered installer first, and that changes what happens when something fails.
Inspect-only generalist
Checks the installation and, if something fails, refers the repair to a separate contractor. That means a second appointment, a second callout, and a second company to coordinate with before the certificate can be signed.

Finds the fault, fixes it, and certifies the installation on the same visit in most cases, one appointment instead of two, because the person signing the certificate is also the person doing the repair.
The check that catches renovations out.
SANS 10087 requires at least 200mm of clearance between any plug point or light switch and a gas burner or release point, and no plug points at all in the same partition as an internal cylinder. It's one of the most common reasons an installation doesn't pass first time: an electrician places a socket exactly where the gas point was meant to go, often mid-renovation, and the certificate can't be signed until it moves.

What a gas COC does not cover.
Worth knowing before you book, so there are no surprises at the door.
- Portable appliances not permanently connected, braais, patio heaters and camping stoves
- The appliance itself, the COC certifies the installation, not whether the hob or geyser unit is in good working order
- Cylinder condition, cylinders are inspected separately by the gas supplier
- Ongoing appliance servicing, a COC is not a maintenance contract
- Any change made to the installation after the inspection date, a new appliance or altered piping needs a new COC

R950 is a starting price and the registered-installer rate, the number that reflects an installer who can also fix what the inspection finds, not an inspect-only generalist's callout fee. What the inspection finds is quoted on site before any repair starts.
What moves the price.
- Number of appliances. The base rate covers the first appliance or property. Each additional one inspected on the same visit is R150.
- Whether remedial work is found. A repair needed before we can certify is quoted on site, separate from the COC fee itself.
- Property size and layout. A single hob connection is quicker to check than a full house running a geyser, hob and outdoor gas point.
- Access. A ground-floor Woodstock flat is quicker to inspect than a unit with restricted access to the cylinders.
- Inspection report only, or a certificate. A report without repair or certification, R750, is a different service to the R950 COC.
- Turnaround needed. A property transfer against a deadline still follows the same one-visit model, but tell us upfront if the date is tight.
